⯌ Physical changes
+ Clear, fragile bones (semi-transparent!)
+ Radiates cold
+ Made of ice in spots, particularly extremities like his hands and feet
+ Freezes over when alarmed or emotional
+ Encases himself in ice when injured
+ Cold feet (leaves frosty footprints)
+ Can regrow limbs...if he shatters them off in the first place due to being made of ice
+ Provides marginal additional resistance to some canon issues (allergic reactions, seizures) as an IC excuse to keep those disruptions OOCly minimal
⯌ Mental changes
+ Amnesia (for now; canon effect)
+ Protective
+ Wants militaristic discipline
+ Occasionally just forced to cool his dumb head
+ Cold logic
⯌ Other
Miles is 4'9" with some severe bone deformities. He had his shitty bones sssort of replaced this point in canon, but the possession has turned them back into literal glass. If you push him over, he WILL break something.

⯌ Other
The amnesia is NOT actually a possession effect (though you are welcome to think it is ICly!) Miles will recover his memories as the effect of his cryogenic revival wears off. This will take a couple weeks.

[OOC] Cataclysm Profile
Sep. 6th, 2019 06:32 pmCATALYST
A hyperactive Vor lord with a massive chip on his shoulder and raging inadequacy issues. Third in line to the throne of the Barrayaran Imperium, which is basically Russian Klingon Atlantis, complete with disappearing from existence three hundred years ago, only to abruptly show back up and start invading everyone about seventy-five years ago. Barrayarans are Scary As Fuck and are known for being exceptional Catalysts/Artifacts as well as an unusual number of anomalous humans. They also have no chill, but they're working on it. Miles used to be a phenomenal Catalyst capable of wielding an absurd number of Artifacts simultaneously. Then one of them died while bonded to him, and Miles was politely kicked out of the Barrayaran military for lying about how fucked up he was about that. He's here to figure out WTF is going on, but also try to figure out wtf is up with Barrayar's weird Anomaly problem. (Like Roy, Miles has deep Anomaly sympathies - because on some level he sort of is one.)
Pinnacle history: Was brilliant and scary during his education at Pinnacle, but didn't finish it; returned much later as a professor of Barrayaran culture (and the Barrayaran Ambassador).
Powers/Abilities: whatever
Ranking: Formerly R-rank; now just a B.
Partner: Roy Mustang
Appearance Notes: Extremely short - 4'9" on his tiptoes. His bones are made of magical glass courtesy of his experience with poison when he was still in utero. His extremities are super clear, while (thankfully) his chest and face have mostly opaque (but still glass) bones. A squashed, gremlin sort of appearance. Speaks with a light Russian accent that gets heavier when he's either hamming it up for effect or drinking. He was very badly hurt recently and prone to seizures as a result. He also only wears clothing that completely covers his chest and upper arms. If you get a glimpse of the skin in these areas, it's strangely blue-tinged, like his blood is a different color.
Permissions: Don't break his fingers or remove fingernails. Sex threads should be vague and/or FTB. Ditto for heavy torture/violence.

CHARACTER NAME Miles Vorkosigan

TYPE Catalyst
POSITION Teacher / Barrayaran Ambassador
ABILITIES/POWERS Miles is a B-rank Catalyst that used to be a high R-rank. He had a reputation as being a Scary Barrayaran Catalyst who could wield a ridiculous number of Artifacts simultaneously. But shit happened and now he can only really bond with his current partner, Roy Mustang. Any other bonds are painful and shallow. He has some minor fire/alchemy capabilities as a result, but nothing flashy.
CHARACTER 'STORY' TL;DR Miles is a very short kinda screwed up Catalyst from a Scary Russian Klingon Empire. He’s bonded to Roy Mustang super hard and might have died a little, but he’s fine! Really’s he’s fine.
I’m gonna break this into two sections worth of bullet points:
BARRAYAR
MILES
ANYTHING ELSE I DON’T THINK SO?? Sorry about the bullet points, but this would have been ridiculously long otherwise.

I’m gonna break this into two sections worth of bullet points:
BARRAYAR
- Barrayar (AKA the Barrayaran Imperium) is an eastern European country that disappeared off the face of the earth about three hundred years ago.
- Basically they’re Klingons. Big military traditions, frankly kind of scary?
- They’re not 100% sure how it happened? Presumably it was Anomaly or Artifact-related, but no one knows for sure! They also don’t actually know … what happened either?? Alternate dimension, or maybe the whole country wound up in a bottle in the back of a museum for three hundred years. It doesn’t actually matter!
- Whatever caused their long exile also dialed up the background magic to eleven, causing especially strong Catalysts, Artifacts, and also Aberrations, which is the Barrayaran term for both Anomalies and also any human that has a birth defect resulting from magic.
- Anyway, about seventy-five years prior to game start, whatever effect cut them off from the world suddenly stopped! And they promptly got invaded by their neighbor, Cetaganda.
- In a move that should have been impossible for a feudal kingdom cut off from the world for over two hundred years, Barrayar fended them off. And then turned around and invaded Cetaganda right back, annexing the region of Komarr.
- So Barrayar instantly got a rep for a) being terrifying invaders with b) terrifying Catalyst/Artifact bonds and also c) being metal AF.
- They started a couple wars, but then the heir to the Barrayaran throne got himself dead in a battle. Aral Vorkosigan (Miles’ father) was declared Regent.
- Barrayar calmed down after that, mostly. They still have no chill and are probably feared by other countries? And are generally known for being kind of regressive/terrible. But they improved significantly under Aral and are continuing to modernize under Emperor Gregor Vorbarra, who took over recently.
MILES
- Miles Naismith Vorkosigan was born to Aral Vorkosigan (regent of Barrayar) and Cordelia Naismith (Air Force pilot). They met during one of Barrayar’s many early wars; Aral took her prisoner and promptly fell head over heels.
- Aral’s family wasn’t super thrilled with Aral marrying some hotshot pilot from outside of Barrayar but try to tell Aral that.
- Anyway Aral was going to retire but then the Regency happened, and also political intrigue happened, and Cordelia got poisoned while pregnant with Miles.
- This resulted in Miles having to be removed early to save his life (and Cordelia’s). His gestation was finished via artifact, specifcally some kind of glass bottle setup.
- He lived (obviously) but with significant side effects: his bones are made of glass. Literally. This stunted his growth and got him labeled as an Aberration, to his great social detriment on Barrayar.
- He attempted to join the Barrayaran catalyst corps when he was old enough, but couldn’t pass the physical exams because of his bones.
- So instead he fucked off to Pinnacle to study there, because he was gonna be a goddamn Catalyst no matter what.
- That went … okay! Technically Miles never graduated though; he got called back home and involved in a whole mess of things, including starting his own mercenary group. Long story, details aren’t super important.
- What is important is that Miles joined up with Imperial Security and ran lots of missions for them, becoming infamous as a Catalyst uniquely suited to wielding tons of Artifacts simultaneously.
- This went great right up until a mission where he had to rescue a bunch of Barrayarans stuck behind enemy lines during a recent (totally not a war) excursion. He wielded no fewer than thirteen Artifacts at once, which. Ended poorly!
- One Artifact died while bonded to him and he generally messed up his Catalyst capabilities. Also he lied about it to his commanders which. Was the worse thing honestly.
- Anyway they kicked him out to go be a Barrayaran culture ambassador to Pinnacle; Aral pulled some strings to get him installed as a teacher. Probably some people got mad about that.
- He immediately encountered Roy Mustang and they like. Instantly got codependent with each other. Both reeling from being broken down! And also having a relationship with Aral in common.
- They found themselves bonding incredibly quickly over an incursion of strange amalgamated Anomalies that originated from outside of Pinnacle. And since they’re both trying to improve their countries (Miles with the Aberration/magic radiation, Roy with his Anomaly conspiracies), they found it best to work together.
- This led them to stumble upon an awful laboratory run by Baron Ryoval (dimly in the Barrayaran orbit) and Shou Tucker (you know where this is going). Turns out Tucker was combining humans and Anomalies and making a horrific mess out of children in the name of science and also selling them to the highest bidder.
- >Roy and Miles cleaned them out, but during the fight Miles was wounded fatally and died. Oops! Fortunately, Roy was there to perform dramatic and extremely gay human transmutation.
- The event did something very strange (and possibly anomalous) to their bond; it definitely left Miles with a great big chunk of something weird in his chest instead of a heart. He’s also prone to seizures now, which further limited his ability to bond with anyone except Roy.
- He went back home for a while to convalesce. Recovered, ish? And now he’s returned to Pinnacle as the Barrayaran ambassador in full. With orders to investigate wtf is going on here, but also to Stay Out Of Trouble This Time, Goddamn You.
- Spoilers: he won’t.
ANYTHING ELSE I DON’T THINK SO?? Sorry about the bullet points, but this would have been ridiculously long otherwise.

Sep. 17th, 2018 08:46 pm[ Well this is a surprise. Miles has been all over the damn continent, and a decent portion of the ocean besides. But the last thing he expected when he'd offered his totally-legtimate-definitely-pirates pirate fleet to the Inquisition was to see his family again. Probably the only two people in the damn world who'd care to torpedo the image of Miles the Rivaini Mercenary Captain - Byerly out of spite, and Sonia out of joy. (It's kind of a shame in Sonia's case, because he's quite fond of his second cousin.) ]
What in damnation are you doing here?
[ Accusatory in Byerly's case, quietly exasperated in Sonia's. He's trying to cut an impressive figure here. Hard when he's a slim little thing in slightly tattered mercenary grays - though perhaps the hulking Qunari mage nearby makes up for it. ]

He has helpfully provided an address in Nonah for a cozy office downtown. Go ahead, bang on the door; he's in the apartment just upstairs.
Alas, the line produces only static now. But the office is still there, having been donated to whoever the next Ambassador of Nonah will be.
CHARACTER NAME: Miles Naismith Vorkosigan
CHARACTER SERIES: Vorkosigan Saga
STATS/DESCRIPTION
Name: Miles Vorkosigan / Admiral Naismith (either way, "Miles" is fine)
PB: Burn Gorman. Facetwin antics (should they arise) are welcome and encouraged.
Height: 4'9" / 145 cm
Build: Slim and a bit crooked. Surgery has fixed most of his back issues but not all of them. His bones are made from synthetic material comparable in strength to regular human bone.
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Gray
Age: 28, but hellishly lined by now. He's had a rough life.
Other: Miles is covered in a plethora of surgery scars from head to toe, the biggest of which being a web of scars along his neck and lower (though the suit hides most of them).
Also, despite what he says, Miles is NOT a clone. Anyone who has the scientific knowhow to detect that is free to call him on that particular bluff. In general, assume that Miles is a reasonably smooth liar (though anyone is welcome to see through him whenever they like).

Backtagging: Totally okay. I'm not 100% at picking up, but if you ask me to continue a thread I am always down with it.
Threadhopping: Hell yes! Best at top levels, but I'm okay with interruptions too.
Fourthwalling: If your character would know, but I sincerely doubt Miles' canon is well known enough for this. Keep info vague and don't spoil future books!
Offensive subjects (elaborate): None that don't fall under "don't be a dick."
[IC]
This is the permissions list for IC (in-character), activity.
Answer the following questions with "yes" or "no", as well as additional information if desired. With IC permissions, it's a good idea to elaborate on what other players can expect from your character if they choose to do any of the following:
Hugging this character: Always. Miles loves hugs.
Kissing this character: Also great! Miles loves kisses even more.
Flirting with this character: Please. Miles' canon love life is hilarious. Please contribute to it.
Fighting with this character: ALSO FANTASTIC. Just note that Miles has bodyguards and word tends to get around.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Completely fine. Please talk to me first if we're getting anywhere above, say, a broken bone. Generally, though, I love getting this idiot into trouble.
Killing this character: Nnnnot in Atlas unless I'm planning on dropping.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Absolutely fine. Just note that Miles is noisy and canonically good at frustrating truth serums, etc.
Warnings: VKS is a pretty dark canon overall. I'll happily shy away from any topics that you don't want to get into, but common themes of the series include: infanticide, ableism, suicide, sexism (referenced as a negative), rape/sexual assault, etc.
